Ever since moving to Japan, I've been comparing curry experiences here to those of the UK. After growing accustomed to a particular variety of food, it seemed inevitable that I would come to seek out other dishes of similar flavour and quality. And it has only been until very recently that I can now say, with little doubt, that the curry experiences in Tokyo outdo the ones I've had in the UK. The Lamb Madras at Sri Balaji in Suidobashi is a perfect example of what has led me to believe this.
Chris P. and I sampled a few things on the menu, but the Madras was a revelation, and one that we'll be going back for time and time again. With each mouthful, and somewhere between the first contact and lasting between 30 seconds to a minute, a variety of layers of flavour started popping out, all pushed to the fore via the perfectly balanced spice. The dish appeared simple, but was complex with every bite, and that is what made it stand out from the simpler curries I've experienced at home in Britain.
After coming out of a semi-hypnotic state, Chris remarked on the wizardry and craftsmanship packed in the dish, and I just gushed how Sri Balaji on this outing alone could make it one of my favourite restaurants. We love it when food does this to us and will be heading back for more, though with all the great curry out there in Tokyo, it'll have to join the ever-growing list of irresistible Indian cuisine bringing itself to our very grateful attention.
